Sources: Renditions to remain policy

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- The Obama administration plans to keep sending terror suspects to third countries -- a process called rendition -- sources told The New York Times.

Unlike the Bush administration, the administration sources said, the Obama administration will monitor their detention and interrogation to ensure the detainees are not tortured.

The sources, who asked not to be named, told the Times the U.S. State Department will play a larger role in monitoring renditions.

Human rights advocates denounced retaining the policy.

"It is extremely disappointing that the Obama administration is continuing the Bush administration practice of relying on diplomatic assurances, which have been proven completely ineffective in preventing torture," Amrit Singh of the American Civil Liberties Union, said. Singh tracked rendition cases under President George W. Bush.

The Times said she cited the case of a Syrian-born Canadian sent by the United States to Syria after receiving Syrian assurances the detainee would not be tortured. A Canadian investigation found the detainee was too frightened to tell visitors of torture.
