Canada deports elderly Polish woman

TORONTO, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Canada deported a legally blind 69-year-old woman to Poland after her request to stay on humanitarian grounds was rejected, her family said.

Stefania Magdziak, who lived with her daughter in Toronto, was deported Sunday night, her family in tears, begging for help, The Toronto Star reported Monday.

"She's old, she can't see ... Who will look after her in Poland? All the

family is here," Magdizak's daughter, Aldona Pindiur, said.

Pindiur and her brother moved to Canada about 15 years ago and gained legal immigrant status. Their mother came for a visit in 1998 and stayed illegally. The family's attempt this year to make her a legal immigrant failed.

Magdziak initially planned to stay with friends of her daughter in Ryn, Poland, the family's hometown, before moving back to her old apartment, in which many things need fixing, she said in Polish as relatives translated.

"I'm done with crying," she said. "I just want to leave safely, without falling sick ... I don't want to create more problems for (the family)."

Officials from Citizenship and Immigration Canada declined to comment, the Star reported.
