Hero fireman saves man from oncoming train

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- An off-duty firefighter leaped tracks and third rails, saving the life of a man sprawled before an oncoming subway train, New York City officials said .

The New York Post reported New York fireman Adam Rivera saw the unconscious man, Marco Delamo, lying on the tracks side as Rivera stood on the train platform on the opposite side of the station Friday. He squeezed between pillars that divide the two sides of the station.

"I thought to myself, 'This is my job -- I'm a New York City firefighter, and I have to do something,'" Rivera, 30, said. "I knew I had one chance because the train was coming, and there was no time to be afraid."

Rivera carried Delamo, 45, to safety with the help of two other persons who jumped down to the tracks. A doctor who happened to be present tended to Delamo until emergency technicians arrived. He is recovering from skull fractures, the newspaper said.

"I wasn't feeling so well, so I leaned against a pole," Delamo said. He said he didn't remember anything afterward.

"Being right there in a position to help -- that's why I joined the (fire) department," said Rivera."
