NOVI SAD, Serbia, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Bulgarian River Shipping Jsc said Saturday more than 150 passengers have been safely rescued from a burning cruise ship near Novi Sad, Serbia.

The shipping company confirmed sailors on the Bulgarian vessel Nayden Kirov helped evacuate passengers from the river cruise ship that caught fire Friday night on the Danube River, Sofia News Agency reported.

The cruise vessel was anchored on the Serbian side of the Danube River when the fire began. The cause of the blaze was not reported.

The sailors-turned-rescuers also helped Serbian firefighters extinguish the blaze as the Bulgarian vessel had to be used as a firefighting platform, the news agency reported.

No injuries were reported, but the rescued passengers reportedly received assistance from ambulance workers.
