NEW YORK, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Internet search engine Yahoo! accepted advertising from online pharmacies that were selling drugs without valid prescriptions, two U.S. research firms charge.

Legitscript.com and KnujOn.com say in a report they found Yahoo! accepted ads from dozens of online pharmacies selling drugs in violation of federal and state laws, CNN reported Friday.

According to the report, researchers for the two firms obtained a wide variety of prescription drugs this year from nearly a dozen sites that advertised on Yahoo!.

They were able to buy drugs such as Ambien, Tramadol and Soma, all requiring a valid prescription, by merely filling out an online form, the report says.

A Yahoo! spokesman told CNN in an e-mail the company has strict guidelines in place for all search advertising and "all known violators are removed from the Yahoo! network."

"As this report illustrates, the online pharmacy marketplace is challenging to police," Yahoo! said.
