Sikh priests charged with sex abuse

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A trial for charges of alleged sexual abuse by three Sikh priests on a young male temple member in Winnipeg, Manitoba, will proceed, a Canadian judge ruled.

The three men lost their bid to have the case dismissed Wednesday and reasserted their innocence, the Winnipeg Sun reported.

An unidentified man alleges he was sexually abused more than 100 times by the trio when he was a teenager.

In December 2006, the man who alleged the abuse and an accomplice briefly abducted the priests and threatened them with swords, the report said. The man was convicted last year of unlawful confinement and assault causing bodily harm and given a one-year suspended sentence.

The priests were arrested soon after their release, the Sun said.

There is a publication ban on the court proceedings, but a trial date is expected to be set next month, the report said.
