'Octomom' in court to stop guardian suit

SANTA ANA, Calif., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- "Octomom" Nadya Suleman was due back in a California court Thursday to ask a judge to throw out an attempt to appoint a guardian over her children's finances.

The hearing came a day after the Fox Broadcasting Co. aired a prime-time documentary about her life since giving birth to octuplets.

The show attracted just 4.2 million viewers, giving Fox a fourth-place finish on the night, Nielsen Media Research estimates indicated.

At one point in the documentary, Suleman, 34, says: "I screwed up my life. I screwed up my kids' lives. ... What was I thinking?"

The court case focuses on the money her children receive from such filming.

Last week, an appeals court sided with Suleman in her legal battle against children-in-entertainment advocate and former Disney Mouseketeer Paul Petersen, who alleges the mother exploited her children for financial gain.

Suleman contends Petersen and his high-profile attorney, Gloria Allred, are pursuing the litigation to promote themselves, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported.

Petersen's lawsuit seeks to create an independent trust for the children.

Suleman say there was no need for a guardian. A lower court was to consider whether to drop the case, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Suleman, who was already a mother of six and unemployed, made headlines in January when she gave birth to eight more children. All of her children were conceived in vitro.
