Saudis round up 44 al-Qaida suspects

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Saudi officials Wednesday announced the arrest of 44 suspects allegedly linked to al-Qaida.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry did not provide any details of the arrests or whether a specific terrorist plot had been broken up, CNN reported.

Maj. Gen. Mansour al-Turki told the network the suspects were part of a "network that was trying to build up al-Qaida in the kingdom this past year."

The roundup came a few weeks after Amnesty International issued a report critical of the Saudi government's anti-terrorism efforts. The report said as many as 3,000 suspects had been detained since 2003 without charges or access to legal counsel.
