Police said Liao left the children in the parking lot of a Fremont grocery store while she was inside shopping. Gina Shelley, 37, told the newspaper her husband Bradley first saw the children inside the car, saying it was parked in the sun with the rear windows opened only a crack.

Shelley said the girl was crying and both youngsters were drenched in sweat.

Police Sgt. Chris Mazzone told the Chronicle the youngsters were treated at the scene and released to a family member. Liao reportedly told authorities her children had been sleeping and that she hadn't wanted to wake them.
