Wisconsin's Gov. Doyle won't seek 3rd term

MADISON, Wis., Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle announced Monday he will not seek a third term in 2010.

"As much as I love the job, as hard as I work at it and as much as my team and I have to contribute in a third term, I believe that a governor should limit him- or herself to two terms," Doyle, a Democrat, said when announcing his decision at an elementary school in Madison, the state's capital.

Doyle said the president and most governors are limited by law to two terms, and that a similar limit was the practice in Wisconsin.

"I am already the longest serving Democratic governor and by the end of my term will be the second-longest serving governor in Wisconsin history," he said.

He said he was announcing now to allow other candidates time to campaign.

"I'm am not going to get Brett Farve on you. I am announcing my decision now to allow other candidates to step forward and get going," Doyle said, referring to former Green Bay Packers quarterback who hesitated for many weeks before announcing he wasn't returning to football earlier this summer.
