Embassy officials had no comment.

David Gimelfarb has been missing since Tuesday, leading to a search of the province's Rincon de la Vieja national park where he had been hiking.

After the student's family became concerned about him, park rangers located Gimelfarb's vehicle in a parking lot.

Gimelfarb's mother expressed confidence her son would have been able to survive in the remote 35,000-acre park.

"I am just praying for him," she told the Tribune. "He's an experienced hiker. He's not a professional, but he's experienced enough to take care of himself. All I can do is hope for a safe return."
