Canadian woman returns from Kenyan custody

TORONTO, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman returned from custody in Kenya to Toronto seriously ill, her lawyer said, adding the nature of her illness is unknown.

Suaad Hagi Mohamud was held for three months on suspicion of identity fraud. Her lawyer, Raoul Bouakia said she needs urgent medical attention but her condition has not been diagnosed, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

"It could be pneumonia, tuberculosis or a tropical infectious disease," he said. "It's some respiratory problem and it will have to be diagnosed."

Bouakia said Kenyan lawyer Lucas Naijuni -- who said Friday Mohamud was taking legal action against the Canadian government, the Kenyan government and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines -- had no authority to talk about the case. Boukia did not comment about his client's legal options.

Mohamud, 31, had been held in Kenya since May. Local authorities questioned her resemblance to her 4-year-old passport photo and after Canadian consular officials decided she was an impostor and voided her passport, she was charged by Kenyan authority with identity fraud, the CBC said.

A DNA test subsequently established her identity.
