HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- The New Democratic Party is still "new," members of the Canadian political party decided Sunday in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The 1,200 delegates attending the party's national convention rejected two resolutions changing the name of the party. One would have removed the word "new" and the other would have enabled the party to hire consultants to research the change.
"There wasn't enough appetite for change," said delegate Ian Capstick.
He was an advocate of the change, Capstick told Canwest News Service, because it would signal to party members and voters a new era of pragmatism and professionalism.
During the debate Sunday morning, a number of delegates spoke about a series of minor changes to the party constitution, a move some delegates said they believed was a tactic to run out the clock on the session and avoid the name-change vote.
