BRUSSELS, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Russia's recognition of the Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia could make the region less stable, the European Union says.

Sweden, which holds the EU presidency, released a statement Thursday criticizing Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's trip to Abkhazia, the EU Observer reported.

"Vladimir Putin has paid a visit to the Georgian region of Abkhazia without prior consent of the Georgian authorities," the statement said. "The EU does not consider this visit compatible with the principle of territorial integrity nor helpful for international efforts to stabilize the region."

Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia last year, but only Nicaragua has followed its lead. Even countries with close ties to Russia like Uzbekistan have declined to recognize the two regions as independent.

Russia now has about 3,600 troops in Abkhazia.
