GROZNY, Russia, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Four Chechen police officers were shot to death and four others were injured Friday during a search operation in the suburbs of Grozny, sources say.

The law enforcement officers killed two gunmen who were wanted on arms stealing charges, the Russian news agency ITAR-Tass reports.

A source told ITAR-Tass Chechen police were conducting a special operation in the village of Kirva-Yurt when gunfire erupted.

"Suddenly gunfire was opened at police officers from one of the houses on the outskirts of the village," the source said.
