PRAIA, Cape Verde, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of States Hillary Clinton wrapped up her African mission Friday by affirming her promise to repair U.S. relations with the continent.
"I leave Africa after this remarkable trip even more committed," Clinton said before departing from the island country of Cape Verde. "I have seen the joy and energy Africans have ... by (their) hard work and perseverance."
Clinton said she was satisfied she had accomplished her mission of strengthening American relations with critical African allies, such as Nigeria and South Africa, and sending a "tough love" message to nations such as Kenya and Nigeria, The New York Times reported.
The United States wants to work more closely with African nations as a partner, not just as an aid-provider, Clinton said. African leaders, in return, must deliver democracy and good government.
Clinton said her focus on Africa would continue after she returns to Washington, noting that her staff would monitor issues she addressed on her seven-country, 11-day tour.
