No attacks have been reported, but area residents have been asked to avoid taking walks until the reptile can be captured.

Details regarding how the snake got loose were not clear, Radio France Internationale reported. The snake species, also known by the scientific name Ophiophagus hannah, is typically found in Asia.

A search was under way to find the snake with police officers, veterinary staff and wildlife specialists all taking part.
