No demerits for student over MySpace post

BURLESON, Texas, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- School district officials in Burleson, Texas, said Wednesday a student at an area school will not face demerits over an inappropriate posting on MySpace.

The school district said in a release that it removed eight demerits against Burleson High School student Lindsey Wessel, 16, over an inappropriate word she used in a post on the social networking Web site, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported.

Also removed Wednesday was a suspension against Wessel that would have prevented the teen from taking part in drill team activities during her school's first football game.

Wessel was punished for posting an inappropriate word on MySpace as part of an item featuring photographs of her and her friends in bikinis.

An unidentified spokesman for the school said the punishment came about due to the use of the unidentified word and not the photos.

Wessel's mother, Alicia Smock, said she felt the school's punishment had been unfair and appealed it.

"How far do you go?" Smock told the Star-Telegram. "It's privacy issues."
