Dodd recovering after cancer surgery

NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., was resting comfortably after prostate cancer surgery at a New York hospital Tuesday, his doctor and staff said.

Dodd's office issued a statement saying the senator would stay at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for "a few days" and his doctor issued a statement saying he should be back at work "within a few weeks," The Hill reported.

Dodd, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, had said July 31 he had been diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer.

"After a brief recuperation at home with his family, he is looking forward to getting back to work later this month on behalf of the people of Connecticut," said a statement by spokesman Bryan DeAngelis.

Dr. Peter Scardino aid Dodd was "resting comfortably."

"It is anticipated that he will be able to return to full activity within a few weeks," The Hill quoted Scardino as saying.

Dodd, 65, has said he still intends to run for a sixth six-year term next year.
