PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Police in Portland, Ore., say a horse pulling a carriage displaying a "Just Married" sign died after falling and breaking its leg.
Portland police spokeswoman Mary Wheat would not specify how the 23-year-old carriage horse died Saturday, saying only that the animal had broken one of its legs during a fall in downtown Portland, KPTV, Portland, reported Sunday.
Bystander Carol Griffin said the event she witnessed was likely very traumatic to the newlywed couple who had been enjoying a downtown carriage ride prior to the horse's fall.
"Who expects that? It's like, you just get married. You don't expect that," Griffin told KPTV. "They're very upset, I would imagine."
No injuries were reported among those inside the carriage at the time of the incident.
KPTV said following the horse's fall, animal control officers helped move the animal.
