LA Episcopal leaders nominate gay bishops

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Episcopal Church leaders in Los Angeles Sunday nominated six candidates for bishop, including two homosexual priests, church officials said.

The nominations of a gay priest and a lesbian priest came a little more than two weeks after Episcopal officials voted in Anaheim, Calif., to adopt a resolution allowing ordination of gay bishops. Sunday's decision makes Los Angeles one of the first dioceses in the U.S. church to test the controversial new policy, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Diocese of Minnesota Saturday nominated the Rev. Bonnie Perry of All Saints Episcopal Church in Chicago, as bishop. Perry's longtime lesbian partner is an Episcopalian priest, the Times said.

LA leaders Sunday named the Rev. John L. Kirkley of San Francisco and the Rev. Canon Mary Douglas Glasspool of Baltimore, along with four other nominees, for two assistant bishop positions at the diocese's annual convention, the Times said.

The nominations are likely to exacerbate alienation between liberals and conservatives in the U.S. church and the worldwide Anglican Communion, the newspaper said.
