Drunk driver with record kills triathlete

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Aug. 2 (UPI) -- A Kentucky man allegedly under the influence of alcohol and already facing a DUI charge, struck and killed a man participating in a triathlon, police said.

John Carr, 47, of Owenton was bicycling in the E.P. Sawyer State Park when Kenneth Yates, 25, of Louisville hit him from behind, police said. Yates did not stop until he was pulled over by an off-duty police officer after a high-speed chase -- with Carr's bicycle still on his windshield -- The (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal reported Sunday.

Carr died of multiple blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, Deputy Coroner Eddie Robinson said.

Louisville Metro Police Department spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said Yates was charged with murder, drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, assault on a police officer, fleeing and resisting arrest and driving on a suspended license.

Yates was already scheduled for an Aug. 18 court appearance on charges related to a June 21 drunk driving arrest.
