NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. Coast Guard rescuers airlifted a man bitten by a shark while fishing in the Gulf of Mexico to a New Orleans hospital Sunday, officials said.
Coast Guard officials said they responded to a radio call from the fishing vessel Predator that a passenger, identified as a 56-year-old Jackson, Miss., man, had been bitten by a shark and needed help, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported.
An MH-65C dolphin rescue helicopter and crew were dispatched from Venice, La., and the injured man was brought up in a basket and transported to a local hospital where his condition was unknown, the newspaper said.
