SAN DIEGO, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A Navy man accused of killing another sailor at Camp Pendleton in Southern California took his own life Friday in his cell, officials said.
Jonathan Campos, 32, was on suicide watch in the brig, the Los Angeles Times reported. He was found unresponsive at 12:20 p.m., just over half an hour after he had last been checked.
Investigators believe he used toilet paper to block his breathing, causing asphyxiation.
Campos, a petty officer 2nd class from Lancaster, Calif., had been charged with a crime spree that included burglary, arson and the shooting of August Provost, a seaman from Texas who was on sentry duty June 30 when Campos allegedly set an amphibious vehicle on fire.
The two men were in the same command, but investigators said there is no evidence Provost they even knew each other. While Provost's family says he was a homosexual, Navy officials have said there was no evidence the killing was a hate crime.
Provost had left college after three years to join the Navy to pay for further education.
