CONCORD, N.H., July 31 (UPI) -- New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch signed a bill Friday banning drivers from text messaging behind the wheel and setting a $100 fine.

The law takes effect Jan. 1, the Manchester Union Leader reported.

Fourteen states and the District of Columbia already ban text messaging. A study released this week by Virginia Tech found that drivers who are texting are 23 times as likely to be involved in a crash.

"It is clear that texting while driving poses a serious danger on our roadways. This new law sends a strong message that drivers should be attentive to the road, and those around them at all times," Lynch said.

The measure bars drivers from using both hands to type on an electronic device while they are operating a vehicle but specifically exempts entering telephone numbers in order to make a call. Studies have also shown that drivers talking on the phone are as dangerous as those who are legally drunk.
