JERUSALEM, July 30 (UPI) -- Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu froze construction of 900 apartments in a Jewish neighborhood in East Jerusalem, an Israeli television report said.
Netanyahu ordered the building freeze in Pisgat Zeev a day after meeting with U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell, Channel 10 reported Wednesday evening
Netanyahu reneged on his original statement that Jerusalem's sovereignty is not up for debate, the television report said.
Netanyahu agreed to impose a six-month freeze on settlement building while attempts are made to negotiate a deal, but the United States requested a yearlong building freeze, the report said.
The prime minister's office denied the report.
The U.S. administration has sought a total freeze on construction of the West Bank settlements as well as in the predominantly Arab East Jerusalem, a request Israel until now refused to accept, the report said.
Building in Pisgat Zeev began in 1982 and today an estimated 50,000 Jewish residents live there.
