Dead rabbits found around Calif. school

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 30 (UPI) -- Dead rabbits have been turning up around a school in San Jose, Calif., which has served for years as a dumping ground for unwanted pet bunnies, officials said.

The deaths follow a rabbit population explosion at the Easterbrook Discovery School, the San Jose Mercury News reported. The growth in numbers has been accompanied by an increase in complaints from area residents about rabbits chewing up their gardens.

"The place is strewn with bodies of bunnies," said Lily Lee, a San Jose doctor and head of a rabbit rescue effort. "They're on the sidewalk in the woods, in places where children play."

There may not be a single cause for the deaths. After one neighbor found headless young rabbits in his yard, he set up a security camera and identified the culprit as a cat, while in another case a dying rabbit turned up after some teens headed into Moreland Woods, next to the school, with a pellet gun.
