ALGIERS, Algeria, July 29 (UPI) -- Sixteen armed militants have been slain in Algerian regions considered strongholds of al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, media reports indicate.
The French-language daily El Watan said that eight militants were killed this week in southeastern Algeria, with three others reported shot dead in two ambushes near Tizi Ouzou, Radio France Internationale reported.
The newspaper Le Temps said the Algerian army killed five Islamic militants last weekend in the same region, while the Arabic-language paper El Khabar reported five Islamists were killed in the south, near Medea, RFI said.
The offensive against the al-Qaida group was launched after two Algerian soldiers were killed, officials said. Radio France Internationale reported that militants retreated to the those areas after being driven from the center of Algeria.
