Lawyer says dog hoarder ill, not evil

DEARBORN, Mich., July 27 (UPI) -- A Michigan man who hoarded live and dead Chihuahuas is in a psychiatric facility getting long-overdue care, his lawyer says.

Kenneth Lang Jr. of Dearborn has signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder and could not throw anything away, including his dead dogs, lawyer James Schmier told the Detroit Free Press in a story published Monday.

Last week, police seized 110 live dogs from Lang's trashed and feces-filled home and found another 150 dead dogs in freezers, the Free Press reported.

"He's scared to death," Schmier said. "He knows what he did was wrong, but on the other hand, he says, 'I was going to start cleaning up the place.' I just don't think he could do it."

Lang thought of the dogs as family and could not afford to have them cremated when they died, so he froze them, Schmier said, noting Lang started out with two dogs, who bred and multiplied, leaving Lang overwhelmed.

Schmier said he had yet to determine whether Lang, who is disabled and in his mid-50s, will be criminally charged.
