Supreme Court nominee Sotomayor Confirmation Hearing in Washington

WASHINGTON, July 25 (UPI) -- Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, says he will oppose the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Cornyn's announcement Friday on the Senate floor made him the fourth member of GOP Senate leadership to oppose Sotomayor's nomination, joining Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl of Arizona and Republican Policy Committee Chairman John Thune of South Dakota, The Houston Chronicle reported,

Also announcing his opposition to President Barack Obama's Supreme Court choice Friday was Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, in a show of unity with the Republican Party's conservative loyalists.

While conceding that Sotomayor's judicial record was "within the mainstream of American jurisprudence," Cornyn said he was still unsure of her positions on the Second Amendment right to gun possession, the taking of private property by the government and "expanding constitutional rights based on foreign law," the Chronicle said.

"So at the end of the hearing I found myself still wondering who is the real Judge Sonia Sotomayor and what kind of judge will she be?" Cornyn said.
