CHICAGO, July 23 (UPI) -- President Barack Obama took some time out Thursday to call Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle to congratulate him on pitching a perfect game.
Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said the president was told as he left a town hall meeting at a school in Shaker Heights, Ohio, that Buehrle was within three outs of a no-hitter against Tampa Bay. As he traveled to the airport to fly to Chicago, someone sent Obama a text message advising him the last three outs were in the bag, and Chicago had beaten Tampa Bay 5-0.
"The president congratulated him, said it was an unbelievable achievement -- something that everyone will always remember," Gibbs said. "The president told him, maybe it was because he wore the White Sox jacket at the All-Star Game."
Buehrle and Obama had already met, chatting briefly in the locker room after the All-Star Game in St. Louis last week.
"As a fan, it's extraordinary. When you're a White Sox fan and know the guy who did it, it makes it even more fun," Gibbs quoted Obama as saying Thursday afternoon.
