Deadly Canadian prison riot quelled

TORONTO, July 23 (UPI) -- An investigation began Thursday into a Canadian penitentiary riot that left one inmate dead and 13 others hospitalized northeast of Toronto, officials said.

The 24-hour uprising began Tuesday night and involved about 200 of the 579 inmates at the medium-security Warkworth penitentiary, the Toronto Sun reported Thursday.

Officials said it wasn't immediately clear what sparked the rampage in which the prison infirmary was overrun and drug supplies pillaged, the Sun said.

Assistant Warden Ann Anderson said the unidentified inmate who died had apparently overdosed on stolen narcotics. Several of the 13 others hospitalized had drug-related injuries.

About 20 hours into the riot, inmates began setting fires, prompting officials to read the Riot Act for the first time in the prison's history. That allows officials to use any amount of force necessary to restore order, the newspaper said.

None of the prison's 340 staff members were injured in the incident, Anderson said.
