LONG BEACH, Calif., July 23 (UPI) -- A California nightclub bouncer who fired a gun into the air to break up a fight faces felony charges after the bullet hit a woman a mile away, police say.
Los Angeles County prosecutors said Gilbert Fonoti, 23, has been charged with discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and possession of an unregistered loaded weapon, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
Fonoti was arrested June 26 after the incident at Club Cohiba in Long Beach. Prosecutors said Long Beach police later determined from ballistics examination that a bullet from his gun hit a woman who was sleeping on her deck a mile from the club.
Fonoti was working security for an event at the club when a fight began outside, police said, and after he failed to break up the brawlers, he fired his gun over their heads.
