Yemen calls for Gitmo detainees' release

WASHINGTON, July 22 (UPI) -- Yemeni terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, should be released, the attorney general of Yemen told his U.S. counterpart, official Yemeni media said.

The official Yemeni news agency Saba said Attorney General Abdullah al-Ulofi met in Washington Wednesday with his U.S. counterpart, Eric Holder, during which they discussed the Yemeni detainees, the custody of Yemeni cleric Sheikh Mohammed al-Moayad and his personal assistant Mohammed Zayed, as well as other bilateral issues.

Saba said the Yemeni cleric and his assistant were arrested in Germany in 2003 and extradited to the United States on terrorism charges, facing trial last year.

In his meeting with Holder, al-Ulofi renewed Yemen's call for the release of its nationals from Guantanamo as well as providing "full" medical care for the cleric and his aide.

The news agency said Holder praised Yemen for it "efforts in judicial and security cooperation with the U.S. through sharing information and expertise."
