Suit seeks warning label for hot dogs

NEWARK, N.J., July 22 (UPI) -- A lawsuit was filed in a New Jersey court Wednesday aimed at forcing hot dog manufacturers to place health warning labels on their products.

Plaintiff's attorney Dan Kinburn says there is scientific consensus that processed meats like hot dogs are a significant cause of colorectal and other forms of cancer, The (Newark) New Jersey Star-Ledger reports.

The lawsuit was filed by the Washington-based Cancer Project and its affiliate, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, on behalf of three New Jersey residents.

The suit is based on 58 scientific studies showing that daily consumption of the amount of processed meat in a single hot dog increases the risk of colorectal cancer, on average, by 21 percent, the Cancer Project says.

Janet Riley of the American Meat Institute and the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council says the Cancer Project seeks to make everyone a vegetarian.
