PHILADELPHIA, July 21 (UPI) -- Philadelphia police officers may not use workplace computers to access a Web site black officers say is racist, the police commissioner said.
Commissioner Charles Ramsey imposed the restrictions after an organization of black officers filed a lawsuit claiming the Web site is a sounding board for racist officers. The organization, the Guardian Civic Association, has asked for a court order blocking the site from department computers and banning officers from posting racially offensive material, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday.
The organization wants the court order to require Domelights.com to remove offensive content that has already been posted, the newspaper said.
The suit filed last week alleges officers often "joke about the racially offensive commentary on the site" and mention it in front of black officers, creating "a racially hostile work environment."
A headline on Domelights.com describes the site as "The voice of the good guys."
Rochelle Bilal, head of the Guardian Civic Association, told the Philadelphia Daily News one post, which she said was typical, said: "Guns Don't Kill People. Dangerous Minorities Do."
The site, which has no formal ties with the Philadelphia Police Department or the city, was started in 2000.
