Senate Dems raise $12.8M in second quarter

WASHINGTON, July 20 (UPI) -- The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said Monday it raised $12.8 million during the second quarter of 2009, and has $7.9 million cash on hand.

The political committee said in a release it spent $12.1 million during the latest quarter, including paying down debt. The committee said it has paid more than $9 million in debt since the 2008 election, and had $3.7 million in debt remaining at the end of the second quarter.

In June alone, the committee said it raised $6.2 million and spent $2.3 million.

"Our supporters are motivated every time they see Republicans in Washington washing their hands of any responsibility to deal with the economy," committee Executive Director J.B. Poersch said. "Democrats grow increasingly committed to protecting and growing our majority whenever Republicans stand in the way of progress, which is now at every turn."

Among the top rainmakers was Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, who raised more than $3 million, the committee said. Nine senators raised more than a million dollars each.
