ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, July 19 (UPI) -- Pakistani officials say the militant Islamic group Lashkar-e-Taiba organized last year's terror attacks in Mumbai, documents indicate.
A dossier written by Pakistani investigators and shared with Indian counterparts in Egypt last week acknowledged LeT, which is based in Kashmir, perpetrated the November attacks that killed 166 people in the Indian city, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.
The newspaper said officials in both New Delhi and Islamabad are hopeful the frank assessment of the Pakistani militants' responsibility will help thaw relations between the two nations.
Until now, Pakistan had not directly tied LeT to the Mumbai violence, but that changed at a meeting in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt, last week, reportedly prompting Pakistani Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gillani and his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh, to pledge to resume dialogue between the bitter rivals.
Gillani told reporters Saturday in Islamabad that his talks with Singh were encouraging, but he stressed it would take time to eliminate the mutual suspicion that has built up between the two nations for 60 years.
