BLAIRS, Va., July 18 (UPI) -- Virginia was the latest scheduled stop Saturday in U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's efforts to boost the federal economic stimulus program.
Vilsack and Energy Secretary Steven Chu were to travel to Buddy Mayhew's farm in Blairs, Va., for a forum on revitalizing rural America with green jobs and a new energy policy, a release from U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
Similar events are to be held in the coming months in Alaska, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina and Ohio.
At a forum Thursday in Wisconsin, dairy farmers told Vilsack they didn't see much that could help them in the $760 million in new farm loans offered in the stimulus package, Wisconsin Radio Network reported.
The government needs to increase milk price support payments or many dairies will be going out of business, Cornell dairy farmer Jan Morrow told Vilsack.
"Right now, I have gone behind so bad, I need $30 milk for a good three years to dig out of the hole," Morrow said.
