Report: ACU offered endorsement for money

ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 17 (UPI) -- The American Conservative Union allegedly said in a letter to FedEx it would offer the U.S. company support in a dispute for money, an exclusive report said.

Politico reported Friday the political organization allegedly contacted FedEx in a June 30 letter to ask for as much as $3 million in return for ACU support in a bitter legislative dispute with UPS.

FedEx said it rejected the offer, allegedly prompting ACU officials to support UPS in a fight over a provision before Congress that could give FedEx additional union power.

"Clearly the ACU shopped their beliefs and UPS bought," Maury Lane, FedEx corporate communications director, alleged regarding a July 15 letter of support for UPS by ACU Chairman David Keene.

ACU Executive Vice President Dennis Whitfield denies his company took money from UPS in return for its support, saying ACU officials oppose the legislative proposal from U.S. President Barack Obama's administration.

"Our position hasn't changed," Whitfield told Politico. "It won't change. I am fundamentally, philosophically opposed to doing what the Obama administration wants to do (to FedEx), and so is our organization."
