VATICAN CITY, July 17 (UPI) -- The doctor for Pope Benedict XVI says the religious leader is doing "good" after undergoing a 20-minute surgery Friday to repair a wrist fractured in a fall.

Patrizio Polisca, personal doctor for the pope, said the head of the Roman Catholic Church underwent the procedure at a hospital in the Italian town of Aosta following his fall in the Italian Alps, the Catholic News Agency reports.

"The holy father's general condition is good" said Polisca, adding "the pope will return shortly to his residence."

The Vatican has offered no details regarding the pope's fall while on holiday retreat Thursday night. Benedict fractured his right wrist during the incident.

Every summer Pope Benedict, 82, vacations at a chalet at Les Combes near Aosta, The Daily Telegraph says.

The Catholic News Agency said the pope arrived at the chalet Monday for a 16-day stay.
