Obama, Clinton condemn Indonesia bombings

WASHINGTON, July 17 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton strongly condemned the explosions at two western hotels Friday in Indonesia.

"I strongly condemn the attacks that occurred this morning in Jakarta, and extend my deepest condolences to all of the victims and their loved ones," Obama said in a statement released by the White House.

Explosions rocked two nearby hotels in South Jakarta, killing at least nine people and wounding 55 others. No one has claimed responsibility.

"Our sympathies go out to the victims of these tragic attacks, their families, and the people and government of Indonesia," Clinton said in a statement. "We condemn these senseless acts of violence and stand ready to provide assistance if the Indonesian government requests us to do so."

She said the State Department was working to assist U.S. citizens injured in the blasts.

Obama noted Indonesia has been "steadfast" in battling violent extremism.

"However, these attacks make it clear that extremists remain committed to murdering innocent men, women and children of any faith in all countries," he said.

Clinton echoed Obama's sentiments, saying, "The attacks reflect the viciousness of violent extremists, and remind us that the threat of terrorism remains very real."
