Babysitter accused of giving wine to baby

CARROLLTON, Ga., July 17 (UPI) -- A 40-year-old woman babysitting four children in Carrollton, Ga., allegedly gave an infant enough wine to prompt the hospitalization of the child, police said.

Carrollton police Sgt. Tony Johnson said authorities are attempting to locate Tammy Denice Truitt, who allegedly caused a 9-month-old boy to be hospitalized with a blood-alcohol content of 0.33, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.

"It is a miracle that the child did not die from alcohol poisoning, considering how little the baby's body is, to be able to stand that amount of alcohol in his system," Johnson said of Tuesday's incident. "An adult can be charged for DUI with a blood alcohol level of .08. A lot of adults can't function at 0.33. The child could have died."

The infant, who was found in a lifeless state by her grandmother, has since recovered and been released from the hospital.

Police said Truitt, who is wanted on charges of first degree cruelty to children and reckless conduct, was not the usual babysitter for the child's family.

The Journal-Constitution reported Truitt was tabbed as an emergency babysitter when the infant's mother had to travel to Atlanta for an emergency.
