MARIETTA, Ga., July 16 (UPI) -- An 83-year-old man in Mableton, Ga., has earned the nickname John Wayne after foiling a home invasion during a gunfight with an assailant, his son-in-law says.
Tennis instructor Danny Carlson said his father-in-law John Parrish saved his life and the lives of two other people when a man broke into Parrish's home brandishing a firearm, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said Wednesday.
"John Wayne is what we call him now," said Carlson, referring to his father-in-law and the late U.S. actor known for his tough guy parts.
Parrish said after the home invader bound him and his wife, Margaret, with tape Tuesday, the gunman rounded up Carlson and a 10-year-old girl awaiting tennis lessons.
Parrish told the newspaper he managed to free himself and locate his own gun.
"I shot three times and heard him groan," he said of the gun battle that prompted the home invader to flee.
While police search for the unidentified suspect, Carlson is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg suffered during the gunfight, the Journal-Constitution said.
