2 suspects die, 8 police hurt in shootout

JERSEY CITY, N.J., July 16 (UPI) -- A shootout in Jersey City, N.J., Thursday morning left eight police officers injured and two suspects dead, officials said.

The incident started just after 5 a.m. in an area of Jersey City that residents say is known for drug trafficking, the (Newark) Star-Ledger reported. Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots before police and SWAT officers moved into the area.

A city official said one officer was in critical condition in an area hospital.
