Parents allegedly shut kids in car trunk

BEDFORD, Va., July 15 (UPI) -- A Virginia couple and another woman are charged with shutting three children in the trunk of a car during a trip.

Dwayne and Conchita Spurlock and Armentha Kennedy, all of Petersburg, were arrested Tuesday after police got a tip from a McDonald's employee, The (Lynchburg, Va.) News & Advance reported. The worker at a McDonald's in Bedford said she had seen a woman loading the children into a car trunk, police said.

Police pulled the car, a Hyundai Sonata, over and found the children, aged 8, 9 and 11, in the trunk.

Capt. Mike Miller of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office said the adults told them they had been traveling in two cars but one had broken down, forcing them into the unconventional arrangement for the trip home.

The children were released to relatives. The Spurlocks and Kennedy were being held without bail pending arraignment.
