DETROIT, July 15 (UPI) -- A missing 5-year-old Michigan girl may have been buried alive, the Wayne County Medical Examiner's office says.

An autopsy report delivered to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office concludes Nevaeh Buchanan died from aspiration of dirt, The Detroit News reported Wednesday.

The sheriff's office says the autopsy results indicate the girl was either buried alive or her face was pressed into the dirt until she stopped breathing.

Buchanan, who was reported missing May 24, was found in a shallow grave 10 miles from her home on June 4.

Her death has been ruled a homicide but no charges have been filed in the case. Two sex offenders questioned by police are currently being held on parole violations.

One of the men dated Nevaeh's mother, police say.
