HOLLYWOOD, Fla., July 15 (UPI) -- Members of a South Florida high school football team rescued a family whose vehicle had overturned in a canal.
Alvin Arnold of Hollywood Hills High School said he and three of his teammates, along with their football coach, managed to pull a man, woman and infant from an overturned sport utility vehicle in a canal off U.S. Route 27, WSVN-TV, Miami, reported Wednesday.
"We just ripped the door off the hinges, and it was like an energy rush," Arnold said of Sunday's rescue "We pushed the lady out, we got her out and we got the husband out, he was pretty injured bad."
Student Jared Maldonado revived the woman using CPR after the family was saved from drowning in the canal. The man and infant survived but the woman later died of her injuries.
"The good thing is, we gave her a chance to be with her family again one more time, but we tried our hardest. We gave her another chance," said Maldanado, who was aided in his efforts by Arnold, Clarence Murphy, head coach Scott Barnwell and an unidentified fourth player.
