EU visa-free travel to include Serbians

BRUSSELS, July 15 (UPI) -- The European Commission proposed lifting visa requirements for citizens of Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro visiting European Union countries.

The commission sent its proposal to the European Parliament and the Council of EU ministers, EU officials told a news conference in Brussels Wednesday. The easement of visa requirements would take effect Jan. 1.

Jacques Barrot, EU justice and home affairs commissioner, said it was a historic moment that should improve relations with the three Western Balkan countries.

Barrot said EU officials will continue talks with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania on abolishing travel visas, the Serbian news agency Beta reported.
