POMPANO BEACH, Fla., July 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Border Patrol agents have taken 10 Haitian immigrants into custody after they allegedly came ashore in Pompano Beach, Fla., authorities say.

Elee Erice, the border patrol's Miami sector spokeswoman, said the immigrants arrived overnight Tuesday in a 24-foot, single-engine boat and were arrested without incident, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Erice said the group included eight men and two women, adding that U.S. agents are investigating reports that up to 16 people had been aboard the craft.

The newspaper said the detainees were being questioned and would likely be deported back to Haiti.
